Grandad Wheels

Brian Abram (author) & Lynne Hicken (Illustrator)

Charlie Stewart’s Grandad wasn’t like most other Grandads. Thanks to an argument with a huge lion (really!?), he had to use a wheelchair to get around… And so the adventures of Grandad Wheels begin…

These three picture books are corkers! I think that Charlie would give Just William a run for his money…Each beautifully illustrated book tells a humorous tale about what it is like to use a wheelchair and the daft things that Charlie and Grandad Wheels get up to. Without giving anything away, it is Charlie that causes most of the fun in his quest to stop his grandad being a bit bored. He definitely has a mischievous side and Grandad Wheels often ends up in fear for his life. They should come with a warning. Do not try this at home!

Disabled people are under-represented in children’s books and these books change that. They show that disabled people are normal, just like everyone else they have challenges that they have to overcome in life, although I’m not sure that Charlie’s answers to theses challenges are always the most practical.

All proceeds from sales of “The Adventures of Grandad Wheels!” are donated to two important charities that help those with Spinal Injuries – the Spinal Injuries Association and Back Up
