Lines, Lines, Lines

Luke Elliott (Author) AsmA Aden Mohamed (Illustrator)

Amari is excited about his audition for the school play, but first he must learn his lines, lines, lines! Who can he find to help him?

Knowing a little bit about the author of the book helps enjoy it even more. Luke is an actor (and now writer) from Birmingham and I suspect that the story is autobiographical as it shows some of the struggles that (very young) actors go through when they are going for an audition. With this background it adds to the joy of reading this book aloud, as now the accents can really come out (for the record my Brummie accent is atrocious!). Luke also writes well in patois, making the reading aloud much much easier than the Brummie parts.

Illustrated beautifully by Asma Aden, the characters really pop out from the page and come to life, I love the way that the backgrounds on many pages are muted and monotone in colour selections making the centre piece of the image really stand out.

A story about perseverance when no one can help, and trying your best to succeed using your own inner-strength and determination. Fabulous for younger readers, or as a read aloud story.
